Representative Achievements

1. Chinese First Deep Ice-Core Drilling Project DK-1 at Dome A, Antarctica (2011-2013): progress and performance, 2014, Annals of Glaciology, 2014, 55 (68). The paper introduces the progress and the achievements of Chinese first deep ice drilling at Dome A, that is Chinese only one deep ice drilling construction in Polar region. The achievement of the project will give a great help and support for the future Chinese ice drilling in Antarctica.

2. The NSFC Key Technology Project “Non-pipe drilling equipment for ice sheet bedrock coring in Polar Regions” (Project No. 41327804, 2014-2020) has been finished. The project was aimed to develop new advanced drilling rig to recover ice and bedrock core samples from beneath the Antarctic ice sheet from depths of down to 1400 m. A series of papers about Chinese subglacial bedrock core drilling in Antarctica have been published, named Antarctic subglacial drilling rig: Part I, II, III, IV. They introduce the research of drill tools and system, and the field application. The succeeds in Antarctica application show an excellent achievement, and fill the gap of the technic of this area, and give a big contribution to the bedrock drilling beneath ice, found a solid foundation for further deep ice and bedrock drilling in Polar region.

3. The National Key Research and Development Program “Development of pollution-free drilling sampling and observation system for subglacial lakes in Antarctica” has been carried out. A series of key technologies have been developed. A new type of special designed cable with properties of small diameter, high tensile force, high conductivity and high flexible has been developed, and made a breakthrough. Paper about the special cable and an enterprise standard, and patents have been published. The achievements have been well transformed to the commercial products.
