Professor Pavel Talalay, Director of the Institute of Polar Science and Engineering of Jilin University, national overseas high-level talent, presided over the opening ceremony of the conference, while Zhu Beibei, Deputy Director of the Office of Global Engagement of Jilin University, and Professor Guo Wei, Dean of College of Construction Engineering, attended the conference and delivered a welcome speech.

The International Symposium lasted two days, with the participation of experts and scholars from Russia, Britain, Denmark, China Polar Research Centre (China Polar Research Institute), China University of Geosciences (Beijing), University of Science and Technology of China, Tongji University, Zhongshan University, Wuhan University, Harbin Engineering University, Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, Hangzhou Dianzi University, Institute of Geomechanics of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Northwestern Institute of Ecological Environment and Resource Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing Institute of Astronomy and Optical Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Polar Mapping Engineering Centre of Heilongjiang Bureau of Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information, and Jilin University. Institute of Geomechanics, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Northwest Institute of Ecology and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing Institute of Astronomy and Optics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Polar Mapping Engineering Centre of Heilongjiang Bureau of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, and Jilin University participated in the conference, and 36 experts and scholars made academic reports and exchanges in the conference.

Academic presentation by Professor German Leitchenkov, Deputy Director of the Russian World Institute of Marine Geology and Mineral Sciences, " Ice/bedrock drilling in the north-western Elizabeth Land: geological justification and subglacial environments”; academic presentation by Professor Keith Makinson of the British Antarctic Survey on "Clean subglacial access drilling: Sites, surveys, systems, and sampling", academic presentation by Prof. Sergey Popov, Marine Geological Survey Corps, St. Petersburg, Russia, "Remote sensing and mathematical modelling of Subglacial Lake Vostok, East Antarctica: achievements and prospects" (Remote sensing and mathematical modelling of Subglacial Lake Vostok, East Antarctica: achievements and prospects). Antarctica: achievements and prospects), and the academic presentation "Unconventional ice drilling technologies and applications" by Prof Pavel Talalay from Jilin University was well received and discussed.

The 8th International Symposium on Polar Earth Science and Exploration was founded by College of Construction Engineering. Jilin University has been successfully held seven times since its first meeting in 2011 and has become a brand academic exchange platform in the field of polar science and engineering and exploration engineering in China, which focuses on cutting-edge academic fields of polar geoscience and exploration engineering and aims to solve major polar science and engineering technology problems, improve China's polar and exploration scientific research level, and strengthen international academic exchange and cooperation in the polar field. The platform mainly focuses on international polar earth science and exploration engineering frontier academic fields, aims at solving the major scientific and engineering technology problems in polar regions, enhancing the scientific research level of China's polar region and exploration, strengthening the international academic exchanges and co-operation in the field of polar regions, and has become a professional international academic exchange event with a large number of international experts, distinctive main theme characteristics, outstanding academic level, leading the international frontier, and forming the international scientific and technological innovation highland in polar science and technology field.

The conference achieved fruitful results and made an important contribution to the continuous development of polar science and engineering disciplines and the strengthening of international cooperation in polar science and engineering at our university.
